It can also be prepared by a reaction of glacial acetic acid with zinc oxide. Heating Zn(CH 3CO 2) 2 in a vacuum results in a loss of acetic anhydride, leaving a residue of "basic zinc acetate," with the formula Zn 4O(CH 3CO 2) 6. In the dihydrate, zinc is octahedral, wherein both acetate groups are bidentate. In anhydrous zinc acetate the zinc is coordinated to four oxygen atoms to give a tetrahedral environment, these tetrahedral polyhedra are then interconnected by acetate ligands to give a range of polymeric structures. Treatment of zinc nitrate with acetic anhydride is an alternative route. Zinc acetates are prepared by the action of acetic acid on zinc carbonate or zinc metal. Zinc acetate is used as the catalyst for the industrial production of vinyl acetate from acetylene:Īpproximately 1/3 of the worlds production uses this route, which because it is environmentally messy, is mainly practiced in countries with relaxed environmental regulations such as China. It is commonly sold as a topical anti-itch ointment. Zinc acetate is also sold as an astringent in the form of an ointment, a topical lotion, or combined with an antibiotic such as erythromycin for the topical treatment of acne. As an oral daily supplement it is used to inhibit the body's absorption of copper as part of the treatment for Wilson's disease. Zinc acetate can also be used as a dietary supplement. Zinc acetate is a component of some medicines, e.g., lozenges for treating the common cold. When used as a food additive, it has the E number E650. Both the hydrate and the anhydrous forms are colorless solids that are used as dietary supplements. The soluble P concentrations were lowest at pH 9 or 10 (11–36 mg/L), the soluble Zn concentrations were lowest at pH 8 or 9 (0.07–0.15 mg/L), and the soluble Cu concentrations were lowest at pH 6–9 (0.2 mg/L, the detection limit).Zinc acetate is a salt with the formula Zn(CH 3CO 2) 2, which commonly occurs as the dihydrate Zn(CH 3CO 2) 2♲H 2O. Copper in organically bound, carbonate, and sulfide fractions made up a large proportion of the total Cu. Zinc in adsorbed, organically bound, and sulfide fractions made up a large proportion of the total Zn. To clarify forms of Zn and Cu in the sludge, we performed a sequential extraction analysis. We assumed that P present in the sludge under neutral and alkaline conditions was in insoluble form bound up with magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca), because Ca and Mg also eluted from the sludge at low pH. The soluble concentrations of these elements changed dramatically with pH and were highest at pH 3. Sludge samples with neutral pH collected from three farms were incubated at pH values ranging from 3 to 10. A chemical element, often simply called an element, is a type of atom which has the same number of protons in its atomic nucleus (i.e., the same atomic number, or Z ). With the goal of reducing the amounts of phosphorus (P), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) discharged from swine wastewater activated sludge treatment facilities, we studied the elution of these elements from activated sludge at various pH values. ![]()
